The middle-aged professor in the third row laughed out loud -- not a polite, restrained laugh, but an undisguised, mocking sneer. In academia, ridicule is "academic murder": one successful public humiliation can destroy a young scholar's three-year career.
"Professor Ricci," he raised his voice, "if we applied the same standards to Stonehenge, we'd call it nothing more than a fence."
Northern Sardinia had not yet fully woken. On the passenger seat lay a road atlas, red circles marking location after location -- each one a "tower" symbol on the map. Its starting point was a highway ramp, and a July morning.
